Tetramethylsilane (TMS) is an organosilicon compound with the chemical formula (CH3)4Si. It is a volatile liquid that is commonly used as a reference compound in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. TMS is a non-toxic, non-reactive substance that is stable under normal conditions.
In NMR spectroscopy, TMS is used as an internal standard to calibrate the chemical shifts of other compounds. Its NMR signal appears at a defined position in the spectrum, known as the "TMS peak" or "TMS reference peak." Since TMS is highly volatile and does not interact with other compounds, it does not interfere with the signals of the compounds being analyzed. Its chemical shift is assigned as 0 ppm (parts per million), and the chemical shifts of other compounds are measured relative to TMS.
