Boron trichloride, or BCl3, is a chemical compound composed of one boron atom and three chlorine atoms. It is a colorless gas with a pungent odor. BCl3 is known for its Lewis acidity, meaning it can accept an electron pair from a Lewis base.

  1. Structure: BCl3 has a trigonal planar molecular geometry, with the boron atom at the center and the three chlorine atoms surrounding it. The bond angles between the boron and chlorine atoms are approximately 120 degrees.

  2. Preparation: Boron trichloride can be prepared by reacting boron oxide (B2O3) with carbon and chlorine gas at high temperatures. The reaction is as follows:
    B2O3 + 3C + 3Cl2 → 2BCl3 + 3CO

  3. Uses: BCl3 has various applications in different industries:

    • It is used as a catalyst in organic synthesis reactions, such as the Friedel-Crafts acylation and alkylation reactions.
    • BCl3 is employed in the production of semiconductors as a dopant and etchant.
